Flowchart to be followed to understand Plato’s teaching. I will add texts later. As of now, only flowcharts will be available.
Relation
Theory of Ideas
IDEAS
To Explain Appearance & Reality
To Explain Unity & Diversity
To Explain possibility of objective, universal, unchangeable, eternal knowledge
To Explain unreality of the relative problems regarding universal
Ideas are common & essential quality of all the members of a class. (Universal)
Ideas have existence prior to things & independent of things.
Ideas are not mental in nature, but objectively real. (In reduced sense)
Like numbers, triangles, etc.
By Mental Construct, Beauty, etc.
METAPHYSICS
EPISTEMOLOGY
Ideas are often accepted as ultimate reality. i.e. Metaphysical Idealism
1. Ideas are object of knowledge (reasonable)
2. Senses are reports & imperfect data from reason
3. Epistemological Realism
What is KNOWLEDGE?
Eternal, Unchanging, Universal, Objective, Real, Necessary
Object of Knowledge
HOW we find KNOWLEDGE of IDEA?
NOT Through Experience
Through REASON, Native Knowledge
OBJECTS of Empirical World/ Merely Objects
Can't be accepted as OBJECT of such Knowledge because 'They're Limited, Changeable & Impermanent'
Objects of Opinion
Through Sense Organs, we find them
Because Ideas have existence in Transcendental world is Transcendental Realism
Knowledge is derived from God & is 'A Priori'
IDEAS:
Ideas are object of such knowledge because there are unchangeable, eternal, permanent & universal
UNIVERSALS are common & essential elements of a particular class
UNIVERSALS are not only independent from mind and also from particular objects of this universe
They have their existence in Transcendental world
In this context, Plato has given Theory of Recollection
Private Noise
Examples: No body can recognize knowledge through sense organs
World of Ideas exists in Transcendental world & is the real world
Knowledge through Recollection
Idea is Transcendental Reality & is the original pattern of the world. (Reproduction Theory)
PLATO
2 Types of Worlds
Empirical World
World of Ideas
On Empirical Level Plato has accepted Heraclitus' thought: Becoming (Change) is accepted.
Parmenides' view is accepted on level of Ideas.
World of Ideas
Difference b/w 2 Worlds
1. Ideas are Real.
2. Ideas are perfect, Eternal, Unchangeable.
1. Half Real, Half Unreal (Ref to Republic).
Another mind
Empirical World
2. Imperfect, Impermanent, changeable.
3. Knowledge through experience.
4. Object of Opinion.
5. Photo copy.
6. Objects are particulary concrete.
5. Ultimate Reality.
4. Object of knowledge.
3. Knowledge through Recollection.
5. Ideas are universal attitude.
Plato has given much more emphasis on Being's Ideas Eternity.
Relation between 2 Worlds
1. Copy Theory
2. Participation Theory
3. Expression Theory
Objects of this universe are photocopy of Ideas.
Objects of this universe are imperfect expression of Ideas that living object are real/half-real & half-unreal.
Objects of this universe participate in their Ideas.
All white objects participate in Idea of whiteness.
Objects of this universe are real objects.
5 Perspective regarding Theory of Ideas
1. Logical Perspective
2. Teleological Perspective
3. Epistemological Perspective
4. Mystical Perspective
5. Ontological Perspective
